“It’s our responsibility to maintain healthy land environments for generations to come,” Patrick Shepler explains.
Born and raised in North Idaho, Patrick spent his youth and adult life exploring the endless forest roads, rivers and lakes. “Camping, logging, clearing ATV trails and anything involving a chainsaw is what gets my blood moving,” he emphasizes. “My heart and soul has always been in the woods.”
Growing up in Coeur d’Alene, friend Matt Lee enlisted in the Navy right out of high school, during which time he experienced some of the most beautiful places on Earth. “However, after meeting my wife and welcoming our daughter, it became clear to me that there’s no better place to grow up than North Idaho,” Matt reflects. “My connection to the outdoors has always run deep, a reflection of my appreciation for open spaces.”
Patrick and Matt realized the need for land management services in the area. Inspired by their shared connection to North Idaho and love for the outdoors, they teamed up and founded Back 40 Forestry in November of 2023. Their purpose was, and remains, clear: to help their community be good stewards of their land. “Our hope is to enable today’s children to grow up with the same experiences we cherished – a life deeply connected to the beauty and freedom of North Idaho,” Matt states.
At Back 40 Forestry, they specialize in forestry fuel reductions, mulching, fire mitigation, land restoration and stump grinding services. “Nothing is more satisfying than sitting behind the controls of large equipment and developing the visions of fellow North Idaho landowners,” Patrick affirms. He and Matt also provide clients with snow removal and plowing during the winter season.
When it comes to what Matt and Patrick find most rewarding about the work they do and their commitment to preserving nature’s legacy, Patrick quickly replies, “Talk about instant gratification! On top of having great customers to work with, we often times get to tackle a ‘mess’ and turn it into a well-groomed environment that is capable of thriving again.”
Back 40 Forestry is currently booking for spring of 2025. Those who book by December 31, 2024, will receive $250 off their project, so call to schedule today at 208.471.4548.
